One of the most important organs of the body, the tongue is fundamental in helping us to eat, speak and swallow. Therefore, it is extremely important to take care of the tongue. A sore tongue is mostly a nuisance that goes away with the passage of time. Most home remedies work wonders in speeding up the process.

We have mentioned a few home tips that will help you in remedying a sore tongue. If the problem persists longer than 4-5 days, it is advisable to see a dentist immediately.

1) Ice & Cold Water

Ice and cold water have numbing properties which helps in healing a sore tongue. Alternatively, you can suck on an ice cube to relieve the soreness in your tongue. Keep doing this a few times a day. Take sips of cold water from time to time to keep the pain down.

2) Proper Oral Hygiene

A good oral hygiene can help in speeding up the process of healing a sore tongue. Flossing your teeth on a regular basis helps prevent infection. Using a soft toothbrush and the use of mouthgels and mouthwash helps in relieving soreness.

3) Honey

The soothing properties of honey helps in relieving pain and inflammation caused by a sore tongue. Apply honey on the affected part for a few times a day.

Alternatively, you can mix 1 tablespoon of honey and ½ teaspoon of turmeric to make a fine paste. Apply the paste on the affected area and let it sit for a minimum of 5 minutes before rinsing it off. This can be done 4-5 times a day.

4) Aloe Vera

The anti-inflammatory properties of Aloe Vera help in reducing the pain caused by a sore tongue. Rinse your mouth with aloe vera juice 3-4 times a day for a soothing experience. You can also use aloe vera extract from the leaf and apply it directly over the affected part of the tongue. This can be done 2-3 times a day.

5) Baking Soda

Baking Soda can be readily found in most homes. Due to its soothing properties, it is another source of quick remedy of sore tongues. A paste of baking soda and water can be made which can then be applied directly to the affected part for a minute or two. Rinse it off with warm water afterwards. Another method is to add 1 tablespoon of baking soda into a glass of warm water and rinsing your mouth with it. This can be done 2-3 times a day to relieve the pain caused by the sore tongue.

Salt is available in every household. Due to it being a natural antiseptic, it is often used for minor and quick fixes. Make a salt water solution and gargle 3-4 times a day. This will not only reduce pain but will also bring the inflammation down. You can also apply salt directly over the infected part but be warned, it will sting.
